Saturday 27th November– Saturday 4th December 2021

DECEMBER IS THE MONTH OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION.

ADVENT SUNDAY / FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT

Dear parishioners,

The Southwark Directory tells us that Advent has a twofold character, for it is a time of preparation for the Solemnities of Christmas, in which the First Coming of the Son of God to humanity is remembered, and likewise, a time when, by remembrance of this, minds and hearts are led to look forward to Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time. For these two reasons, Advent is a period of devout and expectant delight.

During Advent the playing of the organ and other musical instruments, as well as the floral decoration of the altar, is marked by moderation that reflects the character of the season, but does not anticipate the full joy of Christmas. We usually use seasonal greenery instead of flowers, although white Lilies will decorate the altar on the feast of the Immaculate Conception and after that will be placed in the Lady Chapel.

The role of Mary, the Mother of God, in our redemption is significant in Advent. December is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and we celebrate this great feast next week on Wednesday 8th with a mass in the morning and evening. We put aside ‘Salve Regina’ until Trinity Sunday and the antiphon Alma Redemptoris Mater is sung after Compline, at the end of Masses of Our Lady, on Saturdays and some other masses, including the midnight. The Alma Redemptoris Mater is the Marian antiphon until 1st February.

The new lectionary cycle for Sundays begins, that is ‘C’, the year of Luke. Weekday ferial masses are proper to each day and the readings do not change from year to year. The Gloria is not said except on major feast days such as The Immaculate Conception.

DECEMBER PRAYER TO OUR LADY. The ‘ALMA REDEMPTORIS MATER’

Loving Mother of the Redeemer, gate of Heaven, star of the sea, assist your people who have fallen, as we strive to rise again. To the wonderment of nature, you bore your Creator, yet remained a virgin after as before. You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting, have pity on us poor sinners.

God bless

Fr Jonathon
