FEBRUARY IS THE MONTH OF THE HOLY FAMILY

THE EIGHTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME/ ASH WEDNESDAY & START OF LENT

Dear parishioners,

ASH WEDNESDAY AND THE START OF THE SEASON OF LENT

The spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him. (Mark 1: 12-13)

This coming Lent, let us put away distractions, attend to what has ultimate value and enter the wilderness with Jesus our Lord: for there is nothing of higher value than God.

Making space for God involves sacrifices and that means fasting and almsgiving – but these are not ends in themselves. The giving up of things is of no spiritual value unless it is to help us remember that we are dust and to dust we return and that God alone is the Absolute Being of Truth, Light, Life and Love eternal. It is by emptying our lives of attachment to earthly things that our own little lives can find meaning with God, for he will fill us with his Spirit of Truth, Light, Life and Love. For the point of fasting and almsgiving is to lighten our burdens by emptying our lives of useless and often destructive passing things and so open us to receiving God’s healing spirit in prayer. Too often in our weakness, unlike Jesus, we give into temptation and value earthly things more highly than God, so Lent is that given time to re -evaluate our lives from the perspective of eternal life and redirect our lives to God. In union with Jesus our Lord, and filled with the Holy Spirit, let us re –direct our lives to God our Father this Lent through our prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

St John Chrysostom writes:

To set about this prayer, paint the house of your soul with modesty and lowliness and make it splendid with light of justice. Adorn it with the beaten gold of good works and for walls and stones, embellish it assiduously with faith and generosity. Above all, place prayer on top of this house as its roof so that the complete building may be ready for the Lord. Thus he will be received in a splendid royal house and by grace his image will already be settled in your soul.

Mass on Ash Wednesday is at 7.00 p.m. with mass in the morning at the school so all our children can receive their ashes. Ashes will also be distributed on Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning for those who are unable to receive them on Wednesday.

Message from Patricia Kilgallon:

The Clergy Support Fund – Second Collection – 27th February 2022

Last Sunday the KNIGHTS OF ST COLUMBA appealed for your support for the Clergy Support Fund and they will be speaking to us again this Sunday.

The Clergy Support Fund of the Archdiocese of Southwark provides care for priests in their old age and retirement, and in their time of ill health. This important fund ensures a dignified retirement for our priests, after they have dedicated a lifetime of service to Christ, His Church and His People.

In 2021, the Clergy Support Fund provided care to 71 retired priests, at a cost of £1.25 million. With the number of priests over the age of 65 steadily increasing, so too will the financial obligation to the Archdiocese.

The Home and Donate pages of the diocesan website, as well as Diocesan social media channels, are carrying details of this important fund online: www.rcaos.org.uk/donate/CSF or this Sunday you can return the envelopes which the Knights of St Columba distributed last weekend.

FORMING A FOUNDATION OF THE UNION OF CATHOLIC MOTHERS:

The next meeting will be on Saturday 19th March at 5.00 p.m. in The House.

Please come along if you are interested in finding out more and would enjoy the friendship, companionship and support of other women in your parish in a long established and excellent Catholic society.

FEBRUARY PRAYER IN HONOUR OF THE HOLY FAMILY.

Acceptance of Death:

O Lord, my God, from this moment on I accept with a good will, as something coming from your hand, whatever kind of death you want to send me, with all its anguish, pain and sorrow.

Through our faith, we not only accept death when it comes but we can also pray for a happy death. Every time we say the Hail Mary we ask our Blessed Lady to be with us when this time comes. Another invocation to be said any time, any place, alone or with others and most especially with the dying is the ‘Jesus, Mary and Joseph’.

V. Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

R. I give you my heart and my soul.

V. Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

R. Assist me in my last agony.

V. Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

R. May I sleep and take my rest in peace with you.

Blessings and God’s peace to you all,

Fr Jonathon
